Spring brings beautiful flowers like the cherry blossoms in DC, but it also brings allergies. With allergy season upon us, here's a few tips and tricks to get you through the season. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you know that it's not just flowers and pollen that trigger itchy eyes and sneezing. Throughout the late summer and fall there are new irritants like ragweed, grass, and mold. Here are a few ways to prevent or relieve allergy symptoms: 1. Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in your home and inhibit mold. 2. Check and replace heating, ventilation, and air conditioning filters. 3. Take a shower after being outside, this will rinse away pollen on your body and clothes. 4. Don't hang your clothes outside to dry to avoid pollen contamination. I you are having trouble wearing contact lenses or you experience red eyes and irritation, contact our office to schedule an appointment.

To our patients, friends, and family:
We understand your concerns about Coronavirus. We are asking all scheduled patients who are experiencing symptoms of any respiratory virus to call us to reschedule. Specifically, this means anyone who has or recently had a fever and is coughing, sneezing or having difficulty breathing, as well as anyone who has been exposed to someone with the COVID-19 virus. We are seeing only well patients in our office. In addition, we always comply with all CDC and OSHA directives for disease prevention and protection. In addition to sterilizing our clinical areas, we are asking our patients to thoroughly sanitize their hands when they arrive for their appointment and before leaving. You will see plenty of soap and clean disposable hand towels in our bathroom and you will find sanitary hand gel and tissues in every room. These are there for your use and comfort. Every single instrument is completely sterilized after every use. You may not realize it, but between patients, all instrument surfaces are disinfected. This is part of the standard disease prevention protocol and we always do it. If you have a special concern, we will be happy to have one of our clinical team members call you to answer your questions and see how we can help you. To our patients, friends, and family:
The team at Modern Optometry knows there are well founded concerns regarding COVID-19 and we want to reassure you that the health and safety of our staff and patients is always a priority. We continue to be open and available to treat patients. As always, our clinic is adhering to stringent infection control protocols. If you have traveled out of the country or have a fever, cough or acute respiratory illness, please notify our staff so we can reschedule your appointment. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. March: Workplace Eye Wellness Month Each year, nearly 25,000 Americans visit the emergency room due to a workplace eye injury. Although it is common for work-related eye injuries to be more isolated to outdoor jobs such as construction, working in an office setting may cause extreme eye strain. One of the most common eye problems associated with office work is Computer Vision Syndrome. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a condition resulting from to much time focusing on the computer. While consistently being on your computer may not permanently damage your vision, it can make your eyes feel irritated and fatigued. To help prevent CVS, consider getting an eye exam to determine if prescription glasses are needed. Prescription glasses and Blue Light Blocking Anti-reflective coatings are two ways to reduce the effects of CVS. Here are some other ways to prevent CVS and keep your eyes feeling comfortable:

What is low vision? Low vision is a term commonly used to mean partial sight, or sight that isn't fully correctable with surgery, medications, contact lenses, or glasses. In the United States, the most common causes of low vision are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. People can also be born with conditions such as albinism or optic nerve damage that can result in low vision. Low vision can have an impact on people of all ages.
There are devices and technologies that are used to help people with low vision maintain their remaining vision. In some instances, you can learn different ways of doing things, such as using your sense of touch or sense of hearing. In observance of Low Vision Awareness month, it is encouraged to have a complete eye exam to increase the chances of early detection of conditions that may lead to vision loss. CooperVision has received FDA approval of its MiSight® 1 day contact lenses! Myopia is a condition in which close objects appear clearly, but far ones don't. MiSight® is meant to slow the progression of myopia in children and has been scientifically proven to reduce myopic progression by up to 59%. MiSight® 1 day lenses are the first FDA approved myopia management contact lenses and are expected to hit the market and be available for purchase in March of 2020. “MiSight is a revolutionary product that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children needing visual correction,” said President and CEO Al White. “Today’s approval is a big step forward for the ophthalmic industry as eye care professionals finally have an approved treatment for slowing the progression of myopia rather than just providing glasses or contact lenses to mask the condition. The increased incidence of myopia is a global epidemic so it’s exciting to see an FDA approved product which can now become the standard-of-care within the ophthalmic industry to treat this crisis.” Modern Optometry offers several treatments for myopia.
