Blue light, naturally exists in the environment and is emitted by light emitting diode (LED) screens. Many computers and digital devices contain LED screens that may contribute to digital eye strain. Blue light is also considered to be a risk factor for age related macular degeneration (AMD). UV light, commonly know as a risk factor for skin cancer, is also thought to contribute to eye diseases such as cataracts.
Recharge by HOYA and Crizal Prevencia by Essilor are two new anti-reflective lens coating designed to help reduce the blue light exposure from computer screens and digital devices. These coating are designed to selectively filter blue light and allow beneficial visible light to pass through. These new coatings retain the inherent properties found in standard anti-reflective coatings such as, anti-scratch, anti-static, and anti-smudge. Both Recharge and Prevencia lens coatings give a slight purple or blue reflection to the lenses.
Smart Blue Filter is a new technology from Essilor that blocks blue light without giving off a purple or blue reflection. Smart Blue Filter is embedded in Varilux, Eyezen, and Transitions lenses at no additional cost and reduce at least 20% of harmful blue light exposure. Smart Blue Filter may also be combined with Crizal Prevencia for added protection.
